These days everyone is cooking and baking with coconut oil. Did you know that it provides our dogs with significant health benefits too!
The lauric acid and medium chain fatty acids in coconut oil can assist your dog with:
Studies have indicated that coconut oil is non-toxic even if consumed in large doses. Keeping this in mind, coconut oil is a detoxifier and if given in large doses, your dog will have loose stools. Research suggests feeding dogs 1 teaspoon per 4.5 kg (10 lbs) of body weight. If coconut oil is new to your dog’s diet, introduce ¼ teaspoon at a time and gradually increase.
When purchasing coconut oil, select organic, extra virgin (cold pressed) coconut oil as it contails the greatest amount of nutritional benefits and has not been heat treated.
When pupcaking, remember that coconut oil will liquify above 24 degrees celsius (76F). Most of my pupcake recipes do contain coconut oil and depending on the size of your dog, you may wish to limit how many pupcakes your dog eats in one day to prevent the detoxifying effect.
