We all know chocolate isn't good for dogs, but that's no reason why the divine dogs in our lives need to miss out this Easter.
These Easter eggs are made with coconut oil. The lauric acid and medium fatty chain acids in coconut oil can help dogs maintain a healthy body weight, neutralise toxins, expell parasites and it also gives them better smelling breath!
Studies have indicated that coconut oil is non-toxic even if consumed in large doses. Keeping this in mind, coconut oil is a detoxifier and if given in large doses, your dog will have loose stools. Research suggests feeding dogs 1 teaspoon per 4.5 kg (10 lbs) of body weight. If coconut oil is new to your dog’s diet, introduce ¼ teaspoon at a time and gradually increase.
MINI EASTER EGG RECIPE
1/4 cup (62.5ml / 2 fl oz) coconut oil, melted
1/2 cup (60g / 2 oz) coconut flour
Carob powder and beetroot juice for colouring
In a bowl, combine the coconut oil and coconut flour. Coconut flour is very absorbent and if you find the mixture is a little dry, add additional coconut oil. Keep the mixture white, or add carob powder or beetroot juice for your desired colour. Pour the mixture into a mini Easter egg mould and place in the freezer to set.
Once set, remove from moulds and join halves together by rubbing the flat side of the egg half with your finger. The heat from you finger will help the two halves join together. Return to freezer to set.
Store in a refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to a month.
